Lions Come Up Just Short in 4-3 Duel vs. Cal Poly

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU women's tennis team battled through a tight, momentum-shifting match on Saturday morning at the LMU Tennis Center but came up just short in a 4-3 defeat to Cal Poly.

The Lions opened the day with strong energy in doubles, earning the early advantage behind commanding wins at courts two and three. Lidia Gonzalez and Sofia Perovani set the tone with a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot, while Kim-Michaela Zahraj and Helene Schnack delivered a dominant 6-1 performance on court three. Court one was left unfinished at 4-4, giving LMU the 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Cal Poly responded quickly, securing points at courts six and five to move in front. Zahraj continued her steady form, rolling to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to put LMU back on the board. Perovani pushed her match to a decisive third set on court five, but the Mustangs ultimately held on to extend their lead.

LMU surged again with a standout comeback at the top of the lineup, where Gonzalez rallied after dropping the first set to earn a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles, her second straight comeback effort.

With the match tied 3-3, the decision came down to a gripping battle on court four. Schnack fought to force a third set after taking the second 7-5, but Cal Poly edged out the final frame to clinch the dual, 4-3.

Despite the narrow loss, LMU showcased resilience, strong doubles play, and competitive fire across the lineup in a match that came down to the final points.
