LOS ANGELES – In a tight game through three quarters, LMU women's water polo pulled out a 12-10 win over Toronto on Sunday morning.
The Lions jumped ahead 2-0 with a pair of freshmen,
Sydney Chapman and
Cianne Benjamin, scoring first quarter goals. Toronto tied the game with the next two goals.
The Golden Jets took their first lead early in the second quarter before Benjamin equalized on the ensuing possession. After Toronto jumped ahead 4-3,
Mikayla Lopez answered with a powerplay conversion to even the score heading into halftime.
Taylor Enright started the third quarter with a goal just fourteen seconds into the new half. The Golden Jets once again tied the score before Enright's penalty goal pushed LMU ahead 6-5. Toronto again found an answer to tie the game at 6-6 just before the midway point of the third period before
London Boyd scored at even strength to push the Lions ahead 7-6. The visitors added one last goal to set up a 7-7 game entering the fourth quarter.
Carolina Magano and
Yanah Gerber set the tone earlier in the fourth and created a two-goal advantage less than two minutes into the period. After Toronto pulled back within one,
Sophia DeMattia and
Anna Tarantino scored on back-to-back possessions to give the Lions their largest lead of the game, 11-8. The Golden Jets pulled back within two goals two more times, but another DeMattia goal secured the victory.
Talia Herbermann and
Tatum Roistacher shared time in the cage for the Lions and combined for six saves.
The Lions will return to tournament play for the next two weekends, playing at UC Irvine's Barbara Kalbus Invitational next week and then Claremont's Convergence as the calendar switches to March.
