FULLERTON, Calif. – 16
th-ranked LMU men's water polo snapped a losing streak on Wednesday night with a come-from-behind win over Cal State Fullerton on the road. The Lions outscored the Titans, 6-2 in the fourth quarter to win the game, 14-11.
Cal State Fullerton, led by former Lion Kyle Witt, scored first in the second ever meeting between the two programs.
Caden Carpenter tied the game at 1-all on a powerplay. The Lions then fell behind again, only two have a second 6-on-5 converted to even the score again as
Caden Poulleau scored. The Titans scored in the final two minutes of the opening period to lead, 3-2, after one.
The home team doubled their lead early in the second quarter before
Richie Rimlinger and
Max Diaz beat the goalkeeper to tie the game ahead of the half.
After Cal State Fullerton again started a period with a goal, the Lions capitalized on another converted exclusion to bring the score level at 5-5 in the third. The Titans then rattled off the next three goals to take their largest lead of the night, 8-5, with 3:56 remaining in the third. Rimlinger and
Asher Smith brought the game back within on with just under two minutes to play in the period, before Cal State Fullerton responded right back on their ensuing possession. Poulleau scored his second of the game with 49 seconds showing on the clock to bring the score to 9-8 entering the final period of play.
Abel Romero Corbalan scored his lone goal of the day to open the fourth quarter and tie the game at 9-apiece. Rimlinger completed his hat trick to give the Lions a lead for the first time all night with a go-ahead goal at 6:09. After the Titans tied the game at 10-10, Carpenter responded with another goal to push the Lions back on top. Fullerton tied the game for a third time in the quarter with less than three minutes to play. After Diaz scored the game-winner at the 1:37 mark, Carpenter scored two additional goals in the final minute of play to secure the victory.
Stelios Dalmaras made 11 saves to earn the win in the cage for the Lions.
LMU will next travel to the Gary Troyer Tournament with four games between Friday and Saturday.
