Lions Place 17th Nationally in Division I – AAA LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup Final Standings

7/5/2023 12:00:00 PM

LOS ANGELES – By virtue of sending three teams to the NCAA postseason tournament, LMU Athletics has placed 131st overall and 17th among Division I – AAA schools in the final LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings for the 2022-23 school year.

The Lions earned 132.50 total points on the year. Women's volleyball opened the academic year with 25 points earned after qualifying as an at-large team in the NCAA Championships. Beach volleyball's fifth-place national finish added 70 more points to LMU's total. Softball returned to the NCAA Championships to close out the spring with an additional 37.5 points earned after winning a game in their regional.

The Division I – AAA designation is applied to all Division I programs which do not sponsor the sport of football.

This is the fourth consecutive final standings (no Directors Cup awarded in 2019-20) where LMU has earned triple digit points. LMU has reached the 100-point plateau six times since scoring began in 1993-1994.

Overall, 19 sports are counted in the final DI standings, four of which must be women's volleyball and basketball and men's basketball and baseball. The next highest (15 max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings.

The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
