LOS ANGELES – The Lions split Saturday's doubleheader with a, 8-0, win and a, 7-2, loss against the San Diego Toreros. Despite losing game two, the Lions ended up being the WCC Champions finishing in the conference 12-3.
Game 1
In game one the Lions got on the board first when
Morgan DeBord doubled through the right-side sending
Sydney Poole back to home plate. Immediately after, DeBord advanced to third and then scored on a throwing error.
DeBord then advanced to third and scored on a throwing error. The Lions kept the momentum going in the second inning when Poole singled down the left field line, gaining an RBI by sending
Jasmine Sofowora back home.
At the bottom of the third inning
Val Pero singled down the right field line getting the Lions on the plate.
Elisa Rosado came in to pinch run for Pero. The very next play Sofowora hit a home run, sending Rosado and herself back home. The score was now 5-0 in favor of the Lions.
Jenna Perez was able to pitch a no-hitter game in the fifth inning, as the Toreros were unable to make any hits. The Lions were then up to bat, and
Madison Askins was able to gain an RBI by hitting a single up the middle that sent Pero back home. Poole followed suit, hitting a single to right field that sent both
Amanda Treatch and
Avery Francis back home. These successful plays led to the Lions winning game one by a score of 8-0 in just five innings.
Game 2
In game two, the Lions struggled early on as San Diego Toreros scored the first run of the game in the second inning by hitting a single down the left field line. The Lions then made a pitching change, switching from
Logan Caymol to
Paulina Johnson, hoping to regain the momentum.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when
Arianna Jaurequi hit her fourth home run of the season, tying the score, 1-1. In the fifth inning, DeBord hit a home run to right field, putting the Lions in the lead, 2-1. The Lions were in a good position, but things quickly took a turn for the worse when the Toreros scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning.
The Lions were unable to answer back in the bottom of the seventh, resulting in a, 7-2, loss in game two of the doubleheader.
Jaurequi led the Lions with nine putouts while DeBord led with six assists.
After the selection show on Sunday, May 14, the Lions will find out who their next opponent will be.
