Women’s Water Polo Finishes 2-2 Against Ranked Opponents in Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. - LMU Women's Water Polo finished in 10th place in the highly competitive 2023 Barbara Kalbus Invitational. After winning both games on Saturday, #T-23 LMU played in the ninth-place game against #17 UC Davis. The two teams traded off scoring for the first 10 goals before the Aggies pulled away for an 11-7 win.

UC Davis opened the scoring before Marialena Seletopoulou tied the score at 1-apiece with 3:43 on the clock. With less than two minutes to play the Aggies went back ahead. LMU answered with a goal by Isabella Barajas with 37 seconds remaining. UC Davis capitalized with the player advantage with a 6-on-5 goal with six seconds showing.

Kelsey Snelgar opened the second quarter with a power play goal of her own. The back-and-forth game continued as the Aggies scored and Seletopoulou tied the game for a fourth time. UC Davis took a 5-4 lead into halftime after converting a penalty shot with 18 seconds to play before intermission.

Yanah Gerber opened the second half with an equalizer to bring the score to 5-5. The Aggies then rattled off the next four goals before Seletopoulou ended the streak with a final seconds goal with three ticks remaining in the quarter.

After going back down by four, Ruth Arino Ruiz scored with 3:09 to play. That would be the final goal of the day for the Lions, while UC Davis added one more.

The Lions open Golden Coast Conference Play on Friday afternoon at Azusa Pacific.
