Lions Split Against Aztecs and Utes

LOS ANGELES - The LMU men's tennis team split a pair of weekend matchups against SDSU and Utah on Friday and Sunday afternoons. The Lions defeated the Aztecs 5-2 before falling to the Utes 4-0.

VICTORY vs AZTECS

Friday afternoon started auspiciously as the Aztecs took the doubles point.

After that, it was basically all Lions.

Arthur Pantino took court two in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Head coach Tom Lloyd nominated Pantino for WCC Singles Player of the Week based on his performance. Pantino has been a steady hand on court two to this point in the season.

Emin Torlic continued his fantastic play on court three as well with a straight sets victory. He won 6-4, 6-1.

John Bryan Otico got into the swing of things as well, taking the point on court four. He had no issues with the first set, winning 6-2. He had to battle harder in the second set, taking that one 7-5.

The Lions continued their straight set success on court five as Toky Ranaivo completed the sweep 6-1, 6-4.

Alvaro Gonzalez continued to battle on court six as well. After dropping the opening set 6-2, Gonzalez came out and won the final two sets 6-1, 6-3 to win the point.

SUNDAY vs UTES

The Lions returned for a meeting on Sunday with Utah and fell 4-0.

The Utes opened up with a doubles point victory. With the match being played until the clinch, the Utes won on courts one, five and six, with two, three and four remaining unfinished.

The Lions will return to the court with a trip to Tempe to compete in an eight-team tournament hosted by Arizona State. The draws are to be determined as of writing. LMULions.com will be updated to reflect the draws when they are made.
