Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

LMU Comes Up Short Against Top-10 Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 22 LMU women's water polo led eighth-ranked Long Beach State after one quarter, before The Beach came back to take the game 17-13.

Marialena Seletopolou scored a penalty goal less than two minutes into the action to open the scoring and put the Lions on top. After LBSU scored a pair to take their first lead, Mollie Williams tied the game at 2-all with 3:42 on the clock, then Yanah Gerber gave the lead back to LMU less than a minute later.

Long Beach State scored the first three goals of the second period before Seletopoulou took advantage of the powerplay to bring the Lions back within one. The two teams traded off scoring as the home team added one and Ruth Arino Ruiz responded with one of her own. The Beach carried a 7-5 lead into halftime.

The first four goals of the third quarter came from LBSU until Arino Ruiz and Seletopoulou scored consecutively to put an end to that run.

The final quarter featured the most offensive production with a total of 11 goals scored between the two teams and neither team scored two in a row over the final eight minutes. Arino Ruiz scored her third of the day to begin the period, then after an answer from LBSU Alexandra Akritidou scored one past the goalkeeper. Seletopoulou added her fourth of the day to bring the Lions back within four before another answer from the home side. Williams scored with 3:40 to play before Long Beach State scored on the ensuing possession. The Lions scored twice in the final 1:03, as both Gerber and Anna Tarantino added goals.

Madison Davis made three saves over her 24 minutes in the Cage and Talia Herbermann added a save.

The Lions will face UC Irvine next week for the second time this season.
