Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

#15 Lions Roll Past Occidental in Season Opener

LOS ANGELES – LMU men's water polo opened the 2022 season with a 20-13 win over Occidental on Saturday. The 15th-ranked Lions scored six goals in each of the first three quarters to build a lead to as big as 18-6 before the Tigers tightened the gap in the fourth quarter.

Alex Marlow opened the scoring on the new season with an even-strength finish at the 6:39 mark. After Occidental tied the game, Tyler Harvey and Joseph Cavazos scored consecutive goals to push the Lions ahead, 3-1. The two sides traded off scoring the next four goals with Bruno Salonikios and Kade Margain scoring for the Lions. Harvey ended the quarter with a goal at the 1:06 mark to push LMU ahead, 6-3.

An All-American from a season ago, David Carrasco, opened the scoring in the second quarter. Jonny Rimlinger scored a goal sandwiched between a pair of scores from Occidental's Shea Grosz. LMU scored the final three goals of the half with Marlow, Carrasco, and Aden Mina all scoring over the final 3:30.

Marlow started the second half the same way he did in the opening half, this time scoring less than a minute into play. After an Oxy goal, Cavazos scored on the ensuing possession. Tyler Harvey and Denzel Tate each scored back-to-back goals to expand the lead to a dozen after three.

The Tigers scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter before Jack Dunbar stopped that run. Christian Guillaume of Occidental scored three of the final four goals over the last 1:17, with Augie Renezeder's goal at 59 seconds being the only other one.

Finn Friedland made eight saves, and added two assists and two steals, in his first career game in the cage for the Lions.

LMU returns to action on Thursday afternoon in the conference opener against Concordia. The game will begin at 3:00 PM from Burns Aquatics Center.
