No. 10 LMU Splits Second Day of MPSF Tournament

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The 10th-ranked LMU men's water polo team split results on the second day of the MPSF Tournament hosted by Stanford. The Lions opened the day with a rematch to No. 14 UC San Diego after defeating the Tritons on Wednesday in seven periods. UCSD took the Saturday game, 14-8, before LMU responded with a 19-6 win over Pomona-Pitzer to close out the day.
 
Game 1: #14 UC San Diego 14, #10 LMU 8
 
The two teams traded off the opening four goals as Blazo Mitrovic then David Carrasco tied the game both at 1-1 and then 2-2, before UCSD closed out the period with the final two goals of the period to take a 4-2 lead.
 
The Tritons expanded that lead to 6-2 before Tyler Harvey and Jonny Rimlinger scored to cut the deficit in half. UC San Diego scored the next three goals of the half to carry a 9-4 advantage at intermission.
 
UCSD's grew to 11-4 before Carrasco, Mitrovic, and Rimlinger scored the next three goals in the third quarter. The Tritons took a 12-7 lead into the final quarter.
 
LMU's only goal of the fourth came at the 2:05 mark from Rafael Salonikios.
 
Game 2: #10 LMU 19, Pomona-Pitzer 6
 
LMU's offense emerged in the second game of the day. Five different Lions scored multiple goals in the game, led by hat tricks goals from Jonny Rimlinger and David Carrasco. Both Max Walsworth and Tyler Harvey scored two goals apiece, with Bruno Salonikios, Jack Dunbar, Richie Rimlinger, and Blazo Mitrovic each adding to the LMU total.
 
The Lions jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the first quarter, then carried an 11-3 edge into halftime. LMU's lead ballooned to 16-4 after three periods before ultimately closing at 19-6.
 
Can Cagler earned the win, playing all 32 minutes in the cage and recording 10 saves.

LMU and Santa Clara will play in the 13th Place game in the final day of the tournament. The action will begin at 10:00 a.m. from Belardi Pool.
