LOS ANGELES – In a showdown between two of the remaining undefeated teams, No. 15 LMU men's water polo battled with the nation's No. 4 team, Stanford. The Lions ultimately fell to the Cardinal, 11-7, in a tight game.
Â
Stanford opened the game with the first two goals before
David Carrasco scored on consecutive possessions to even the game at 2-all. Stanford added the final two goals of the period to take a 4-2 advantage after the first quarter.
Â
The Cardinal built up a 5-2 lead in the second quarter ahead of
Max Walsworth's goal at 6:45. The visitors scored the next two, but
Blazo Mitrovic put an end to the run with a goal with less than a minute on the clock until halftime.
Â
Carrasco and
Joseph Cavazos pulled LMU within a goal, 7-6, with goals to open the third quarter. Stanford responded with the next two to bring their lead back to three with a period to play.
Â
Jonny Rimlinger scored with 3:23 on the clock in the fourth quarter but LMU couldn't close the gap any further in defeat.
Â
Stelios Dalmaras recorded double digit saves with 10 and added an assist and steal to his day.
Â
LMU will travel to UC San Diego on Wednesday for a non-conference version of the WWPA matchup before facing these same Cardinal again on Friday to open the MPSF Invitational in Palo Alto.
