CLEVELAND – Following a historic spring, three LMU teams earned points for the university in the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup. The successes of these three spring sport programs placed the Lions ninth among Division I-AAA schools, which is all Division I programs that do not sponsor football. With NCAA Tournament postseason berths for beach volleyball, softball, and women's tennis, the Lions earned 145.50 points to finish 117
th in Division I.
"It has been one of the best years for the LMU Athletic Department, which is a testament to our student-athletes, coaches and staff," said Director of Athletics
Craig Pintens. "We cannot achieve anything without the tremendous support we receive from the President's Office and administration. We will continue to focus on becoming the preeminent Division I-AAA athletic department in the country and the Director's Cup is a tremendous metric to measure our progress."
LMU's beach volleyball team won three games in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Softball won the West Coast Conference for the first time in school history to earn a spot back in the NCAA Tournament Regionals. Women's tennis celebrated a special season with an at-large selection in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
This is the third consecutive final standings (no Directors Cup awarded in 2019-20) where LMU has earned triple digit points. LMU has reached the 100-point plateau five times since scoring began in 1993-1994.
Overall, 19 sports are counted in the final DI standings, four of which must be women's volleyball and basketball and men's basketball and baseball. The next highest (15 max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
