LOS ANGELES – Through continued support from donors, alumni, community members, and fans, LMU Athletics set a new high mark for the largest giving year in department history. In total, more than $5.82 million was raised for student-athletes to support scholarships, facility renovations, and competitive opportunities.
Â
We are very excited about the momentum our donors have created for LMU Athletics with another record-breaking year," said Athletic Director
Craig Pintens. "Two consecutive record-breaking years are a testament to the belief in our student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Coming off one of our most successful years competitively, we will continue to strive toward comprehensive excellence."
Private gifts fueled several key improvements to facilities that directly benefit student-athletes. For the first time in school history, a night game was played on the bluff as the WCC Champion softball team now can play under stadium lights at Smith Field. Sullivan Field and Burns Aquatics Center received updated branding and marks to highlight the competitive successes in the history of the soccer, water polo, and swim programs as well as connect the facilities with the unified look of LMU Athletics. The LMU Tennis Center now can stream from six court cameras simultaneously, allowing viewers all over the world to watch the Lions.
Â
The Walk of Champions, a project designed to highlight and celebrate the history and successes of the teams that compete within Gersten Pavilion, now is completed leading from the women's basketball and women's volleyball locker rooms to the competition court. Additionally, the women's basketball locker room received a complete renovation, which included updated lockers, team areas, and a food cove.
Â
A highlight from last year was the tremendous success of LMU's Day of Giving, which earned $647,416, a 43.7 percent increase over the previous year thanks to 1,550 gifts. Generous donors awarded challenge gifts to the top five men's and women's teams that earned the most dollars in one day. Earning the top spots were men's rowing with $90,810 and softball at $57,367.
Â
This upcoming year will provide the opportunity to achieve even more. Even more plans for facility enhancements are on the horizon as LMU continues to build on previous successes and put student-athletes in a better position to be competitive and successful.
