LOS ANGELES – LMU softball picked up a split on Friday in the final conference series of the regular season. The Lions recovered from an early loss to defeat the Santa Clara Broncos in the second game of the series to create a rubber game on Saturday.
Â
GAME 1: Santa Clara 5, LMU 2
Â
Santa Clara put the first four runs on the board through their first four innings. An RBI double in the first, fielder's choice and RBI single in the third, then a solo shot in the top of the fourth gave the Broncos a 4-0 lead.
LMU began to chip away in the bottom half of the inning as Alyssa Daniel doubled home
Megan Dedrick in the fourth. The Lions would load the bases before ending the inning on a 6-2-3 double-play.
Â
Andrea Gonzalez launched a solo home run over the left field wall to bring the Lions within two, 4-2, in the fifth.
Â
The Broncos added a one-out RBI double in their next at-bat to make it a 5-2 game.
Â
The score line would stick despite LMU putting together back-to-back two out hits in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate.
Â
GAME 2:
Â
The Broncos again scored in the top of the first to take an early lead on an RBI walk.
Â
Alyssa Daniell responded with a solo shot in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-all.
Â
A sacrifice fly in the top of the third pushed the Broncos back ahead, bringing the score to 2-1.
Â
The Lions made significant noise in the bottom half of the third inning, stringing together six runs on six hits.
Andrea Gonzalez opened the inning with a double to right center and immediately scored on
Sydney Poole's single up the middle. After the first out of the frame,
Morgan DeBord,
Georgia Blair, and Daniell strung together three consecutive singles scoring two and setting up a situation for
Jasmine Sofowora to break it open. The LMU freshman came up to the plate and cleared the bases for a two-RBI double to left center. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Sofowora scored on a sac bunt off the bat of
Val Pero.
Â
LMU tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth to run rule the Broncos. Sofowora hit a two-run homer with nobody out to push the lead to seven. The Lions tacked on the final run as
Megan Dedrick earned a game-ending walk to extend the lead to seven and end the game.
