RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The #18 LMU women's water polo team came up just short in their quest to win a Golden Coast Conference title in 2022. The Lions dropped the final of the GCC Championships to #8 Fresno State, 11-8.
Mollie Williams opened the game with a goal before Fresno State tied it just before the halfway mark of the first quarter.
Marialena Seletopoulou pushed LMU back on top before the Bulldogs again answered.
Yanah Gerber gave LMU a third lead before Fanni Muzsnay tied the game for the third time in the opening six and a half minutes. The Lions carried a 4-3 advantage after one thanks to the go-ahead goal by
Mei Vilanova with under a minute on the clock.
The Bulldogs flipped the script in the second quarter, scoring all four goals before halftime to take a 7-4 edge over the Lions.
With the score at 8-4,
Ruth Arino Ruiz helped put LMU back on the board. Fresno State added one more goal before the period ended.
The Lions had a chance in the final quarter, and even with outscoring the Bulldogs in the final eight minutes came up just short in the end. Seletopoulou and Arino Ruiz each scored a goal in the period to make it 11-7 with 6:12 to play.
Alexandra Akritidou scored the final goal of the season for the Lions with 1:22 on the clock.
Madison Davis made six saves in the loss.
Alena Sanchez and
Ruth Arino Ruiz were named to the GCC All-Tournament team.
