LOS ANGELES – LMU women's water polo wrapped up the regular season with a 14-7 Golden Coast Conference win over Azusa Pacific on Thursday morning.
Mollie Williams opened the game with a goal in the first 40 seconds of play. LMU added to the lead as
Yanah Gerber scored to make it 2-0. After APU put one on the board,
Kelsey Snelgar and Sanchez closed out the period with the next two goals to make it a 4-1 game after eight minutes of play.
The Cougars scored the first goal of the second quarter before Sanchez again had an answer.
Isabella Barajas added to the lead with a penalty shot in the final minute to bring the advantage to 6-2 at intermission.
Barajas opened the third quarter with another goal and was followed by
Alexandra Akritidou and Sanchez to push LMU ahead 9-2. Azusa Pacific took the next two goals before Gerber and Sanchez ended the period with goals to make it an 11-4 game.
The Lions went up eight with a goal from
Ruth Arino Ruiz to open the final period. After the Cougars earned one back, Snelgar and
Risse Sanchez scored consecutive goals to push LMU ahead by nine with 5:04 remaining. The game ended at 14-7 after APU scored the game's final two goals.
The Lions will earn the third seed heading into the conference tournament, finishing the regular season at 5-2 in league. Pacific still has one remaining game and could finished tied with LMU but does hold the head-to-head advantage.
The GCC Championships will be held in Riverside, Calif. From Apr. 22-24.
