A No Hitter and Two Mercy Rule Victories In Lions Doubleheader

LOS ANGELES– The Loyola Marymount University softball team (19-10) defeated the Harvard Crimson, 10-0, in game 1 with a no hitter performance and then sealed the sweep with another win, 10-2, to improve to 21-10 on the season. These two wins, ties the record for fifth most consecutive wins in program history.  

Game 1 between the Lions was a landslide, as the Lions were able to force the eight-run mercy rule in five innings, while also pitching a no hitter.

Peyton Angulo started the Lions off, bombing a 3 RBI home run to right center field, giving the Lions a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  
 
Later in the same inning, Jasmine Sofowora would hit her first home run of the season, as she compiled 3 RBIs to increase the lead for the Lions, 6-0.
 
In the bottom of the second, the Lions were determined to bring more energy, Arianna Jaurequi would hit an RBI single to centerfield, allowing Morgan DeBord to score for the Lions.
 
Goergia Blair would then hit an RBI single to center field herself, bringing in Peyton Angulo. Which was immediately followed up by another amazing hit by Sofowora, who hit an RBI single up the middle.
 
Still in the bottom of the second, Alyssa Daniell nailed another RBI single for the Lions, allowing Blair to net another run to make the score, 10-0. The rest of the game was all defense as the Lions would not allow a hit or run and the Crimson would allow a few more hits before the mercy rule would apply in the middle of the fifth inning.
 
The Lions finished the game with twelve total hits to the Crimsons, zero hits. Jasmine Sofowora finished 2-3 at the plate, hitting her first home run of the season, while compiling four RBIs. Peyton Angulo also went 1-2 at the plate, hitting her third home run this season, while compiling three RBIs. Morgan DeBord went 2-2 at the plate, scoring two of the Lions ten runs.

Jenna Perez moves to 8-3, pitching 4.0 innings while allowing no hits and no runs, while producing ten strikeouts.  Logan Caymol was the relief, pitching 1.0 innings while allowing no hits and no runs. This is the Lions first no hitter of the season.   

In the beginning of game two, the Crimson were determined to get hits and runs on the board as they shot out like a rocket against the Lions.
 
In the top of the first inning, the Crimson would hit a 2 RBI double to give them an early, 2-0, lead over the Lions.
 
Although the Lions were able to get some hits on the board, they were not able to score until the bottom of the third inning, when Val Pero hit a 2 RBI single up the middle to bring in Sydney Poole and Alyssa Daniell to tie the game, 2-2.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions begin to dig deep to takeover, as Allysa Daniell hit an RBI single to left center field, bringing in Sofowora to take the lead, 3-2.

The Lions allowed the Crimson to get a runner to third base in both the fourth and fifth inning but were able to hold them on base.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lions were determined to end the game early as they started to gain momentum at the plate.
 
Val Pero started the fifth inning off with a 2 RBI single down left field line, followed by an RBI double by Megan Dedrick that brought Pero in to increase the lead to, 6-2.
 
In the same inning, Sofowora would continue her excellent performance on the day by hitting an RBI single to center field, which was followed by a 2 RBI double by Andrea Gonalez to make the score, 9-2. Poole would then score off a fielding error by third base, after Morgan DeBord hit a pop fly to the infield, which applied the eight-run mercy rule in five innings.
 
The Lions finished the game with twelve total hits to the Crimsons, seven hits. Val Pero finished 3-3 at the plate, collecting 4 RBIs in the act. Jasmine Sofowora went 2-3 at the plate, while compiling an RBI and scoring two runs. Andrea Gonzalez went 2-3 at the plate, also collecting 2 RBI in the second game.

Jessica Hubbard is now 4-0 this season, as she pitched 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and no runs. Paulina Johnson got the start, pitching 1.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs.
 
The Lions are now 16-0 when leading after five innings. Jenna Perez is not ranked top 10 in the nation for strikeouts, and with today's two wins, the Lions have tied fifth place for most consecutive wins in program history.

The Lions will return to Smith Field Thursday, Mar. 17 for a double header with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The first pitch is set to start at 3:00 pm PST., with game two to follow at 5:00 p.m. PST.
