LA JOLLA, Calif. – On the opening day of the 2021 season, LMU men's water polo (0-2) played both #6 UCSB and (RV) Pomona-Pitzer at the UCSD Triton Invite. The Lions opened the day with a 14-7 loss to the Gauchos and followed with a defeat to Pomona-Pitzer, 10-7.
LMU was led in the return of
Blazo Mitrovic, with the All-American scoring three goals in each game to lead the Lions.
Mitrovic scored twice in the first quarter of the UCSB game, and was joined by
Augie Renezeder on the score sheet in the opening period. LMU received third quarter goals by
Rafael Salonikios and Mitrovic, before
Alexandros Athymaritis and
Bruno Salonikios closed out the game with goals in the fourth quarter.
Tyler Harvey scored LMU's only first quarter goal against Pomona-Pitzer. Three different Lions scored in the second quarter with Athymaritiis, Renezeder, and Mitrovic all adding one before halftime. Mitrovic scored twice in the third quarter before Athymaritis closed out the game in the final minute with a final goal.
The tournament will continue on Saturday with LMU facing Whittier College at 11:10 am and closing against Westcliff at 3:10 pm.
