Lions And Tritons Game Decided in Closing Seconds

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Whenever LMU and UC San Diego match up, the intensity of the games increases. Wednesday night's game was no exception as the final goal was scored in the final 15 seconds to break a tie and give the #9 Tritons a 14-13 win.

The #17 Lions opened the game with goals by Alexandros Athymaritis and Blazo Mitrovic in the first minute and a half of the game. UCSD scored their first goal at the 5:55 mark, before Jonny Rimlinger capitalized on the man advantage on the next possession to put LMU ahead 3-1. The Tritons scored with 3:14 on the clock, before Joseph Cavazos scored nearly two minutes later. Alex Marlow gave LMU a 5-2 lead with 33 second to play in the quarter, but UCSD put one in with four seconds to play to make it 5-3 after the opening eight minutes.

A pair of goals by Athymaritis in the opening minutes of the second quarter pushed LMU ahead, 7-3. UC San Diego cut it to 7-5 before Mitrovic scored with 3:40 to play until the half. In front of the home crowd, the Tritons cut it to 8-6, but Daniel Roth increased the lead back up to three goals 24 seconds remaining in the half. The Lions carried the 9-6 lead into intermission.

UC San Diego opened the half with a goal, before Athymaritis scored one of his team-high four goals with 4:53 on the clock. The Tritons would score the four of the final five goals of the quarter, with Mitrovic scoring in the middle of that stretch of play.

Rimlinger broke the tie with the first goal of the fourth quarter and Cavazos added to it with 3:33 remaining in the game to push LMU ahead 13-11. The Tritons would score at the 3:08 mark, 1:12 mark, and 15 second mark to close out the game and comeback for the win.

Robert Halligan finished with 11 saves in goal.

The Lions will head north and play in the competitive MPSF Tournament in Berkeley, beginning with Friday's game against the tied for third Stanford Cardinal.
