LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University softball team won its first game of its three-game series against Saint Mary's College in a walk-off, 5-4 at Smith Field on Friday afternoon.
The Lions started the game off on a strong note, as they put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first.
Andrea Gonzalez set the tone when she hit a homerun, the Lions then made it a 2-0 lead when
Morgan DeBord singled and sent
Megan Dedrick home.
Both teams went scoreless until the Gaels made noise in the top of the seventh, putting two runs on the board to tie things up, forcing extra innings.
The teams went scoreless in the eighth, and then SMC put two runs on the board to take a 4-2 lead. LMU answered back in the bottom of the ninth.
Megan Dedrick walked, and then advanced when
Desiree Moreno reached on a fielder's choice.
Kat Hummer came in to pinch run for Moreno. Dedrick and Hummer advanced when DeBord singled. Dedrick scored when
Madalie Gomez grounded out.
Down 4-3,
Alyssa Daniell doubled to send
Allisha Martinez and DeBord scored to win the game in a 5-4 walk-off.
The Lions will conclude their series on Saturday with a double header starting at noon. LMU will honor seniors,
Mallory Eckroth,
Marina Vitalich,
Molly Grumbo,
Desiree Moreno and
Megan Martin.
