DAVIS, CA – LMU took advantage of playing a final game in the 2021 WWPA Men's Water Polo Championships. The Lions knocked off the second-seeded UC San Diego Tritons to claim third place in the tournament, 18-16.
LMU's offense awoke on Sunday after being limited to just five goals on Saturday. After allowing the first two goals, the Lions answered with four in a row and five of the final six goals to close out the first quarter.
Tyler Harvey scored twice, with
Joseph Cavazos,
Blazo Mitrovic, and
David Carrasco each adding one apiece.
The lead ballooned to seven in the second quarter following a seven-goal outburst in the period. Cavazos and Carrasco each scored two more, while
Jonny Rimlinger,
Jack Baumgardner and Harvey scored once each to make it a 12-5 game at the half.
The Tritons were able to cut into the lead in the third quarter, holding a 6-4 advantage in the period. Four different Lions scored in the third as Rimlinger, Harvey, and Cavazos were joined by a goal from
Alexandros Athymaritis.
The two LMU goals in the fourth quarter were needed as UCSD continued to cut into the lead. Cavazos scored on a powerplay, then with less than a minute to play
Daniel Roth converted a penalty shot before the Tritons added two in the final 23 seconds.
Robert Halligan recorded seven saves in goal for the Lions.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Halligan and Harvey were named to the All-Tournament First Team, and Carrasco was included on the All-Tournament Second Team.
