Lions Win Conference Opener in Carrasco’s Return to Competition

LOS ANGELES – In his first game back since opening weekend, David Carrasco helped lead #15 LMU to a 16-12 win over #T-17 Air Force on Saturday.
 
The Lions started the game quickly with goals from Carrasco then Marlow to jump ahead 2-0. Air Force closed out the period with two goals in the final minute of action to even the score heading into the second.
 
Marlow and Carrasco again gave LMU a two-goal advantage to open the second period scoring their second goals each. Rafael Salonikios added to the lead with a goal at the 4:27 mark to make it a 5-2 LMU lead, before Air Force got one back. Max Walsworth and Jonny Rimlinger scored less than a minute apart to extend the lead to 7-3. The Falcons got one back before the end of the half.
 
Air Force scored the first goal of the third quarter before LMU answered with three consecutive goals. Luke Chandler scored and was followed with goals three and four of David Carrasco's game. Air Force added two back to cut into the lead before Rimlinger scored with 55 seconds remaining in the period. The Falcons scored with 38 seconds on the clock, before Tyler Harvey closed out the period with a goal at the 13 seconds to take a 12-8 lead.
 
The visitors scored two goals to open the final quarter before Alexandros Athymartis got one past the goalkeeper. Marlow increased the lead to 14-10 and forced Air Force to call a timeout.  Coming out of the timeout, Blazo Mitrovic extended the lead to 15-10. Mitrovic would add one more late in the game to help secure the 16-12 victory.
 
Carrasco finished with 10 points in his return, adding six assists to his four goals.
 
Robert Halligan made 14 saves in the cage and added three assists in the win.
 
The Lions will play a non-conference match on Sunday, hosting UC Santa Barbara.
