LMU and WCC Announcement West Coast Conference

LMU Fall Sports on Hold as WCC Postpones Competition Due to COVID-19

8/13/2020 11:00:00 AM

The West Coast Conference announced the postponement of all conference fall competition following a unanimous decision by the WCC Presidents' Council in consultation with the conference's 10 athletic directors and Commissioner Gloria Nevarez.

The decision impacts LMU's fall sports, including men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, and cross-country. The conference intends to explore various models for conducting WCC competition in these sports in spring 2021. LMU will also postpone competition in men's water polo, which competes in the Western Water Polo Association.

"This difficult decision was made out of deep concern for and commitment to student-athletes, whose health and safety are paramount," said Craig Pintens, LMU athletic director. "While I share the disappointment that our teams, coaches, staff and Lions fans are feeling today, I am confident that our perseverance will pay dividends in the future. We will continue to work diligently with the WCC, university leaders and public health authorities to develop a path forward to compete and we will support the physical, emotional and academic well-being of our student-athletes."

LMU will honor the scholarships of student-athletes impacted by the postponement and maintain access to academic advising and tutoring, among other support services.
