EUGENE Ore.,-- The Loyola Marymount University softball team split on its last day of the Oregon Invitational, as the team lost to Seattle University 12-4, and then beat Portland State 6-5 in Eugene, Ore.
The Lions started the second day of the invitational against Seattle University, where the Redhawks scored nine runs in the bottom of the second. LMU put two runs on the board on the board in the top of the third, after Megan Dedrick hit a homerun with Andrea Gonzalez on base.
The Lions were able to put two more runs on the board in the top of the fifth, after Gonzalez homered with Peyton Angulo on base.
Seattle U scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, closing out the game after the end of the fifth inning.
The Lions had four total hits, while the Redhawks had eight. Angulo went 1-1 at the plate, while Dedrick and Riley Ehlen went 1-2.
Linnay Wilson took the loss after pitching 1.1 innings and allowing five hits and seven runs. Mallory Eckroth pitched 3.1 innings and gave up three hits and five runs.
Down 1-0 on the day, LMU gained its momentum against Portland State. PSU scored a run in the top of the first. The Lions responded in the bottom of the first, as Molly Grumbo ran home after a single from Gonozalez.
Both teams went quietly until the bottom of the fifth, when Sierra Marshall hit a sacrifice fly to send Gonzalez home, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead.
Portland State scored four runs in the top of the seventh, LMU answered back with four more. Runs. Dedrick hit her second homerun of the day with Gonzalez on base. Ehlen then singles to send Marshall and Page Mindedahl home, to close out the game on top, with a 6-5 win.
LMU had seven total hits, while PSU had eight. Ehlen went 2-2 at the plate, while Moreno and Gonzalez went 1-2.
Up next: The Lions will be back at home at Smith Field next week to host the LMU Invitational starting on Thursday.
