FULLERTON, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount University softball team lost battled it out against UC Riverside, but the team fell against the Highlanders and lost its second game against Cal State Fullerton at the Titan Classic.
The Lions opened up the first inning against the Highlanders on a strong note, as Grumbo singled to the shortstop, and then advanced to second after a groundout from Morgan Debord.
Desiree Moreno was walked, and then advanced to second after
Peyton Angulo doubled to right center, sending Grumbo home.
Megan Dedrick walked, and then
Allisha Martinez walked, sending Angulo to third and Moreno home. The walks continued, as
Andrea Gonzalez walked, advancing Martinez to second, Dedrick to third and Angulo home. A sacrifice fly from
Riley Ehlen sent Dedrick home, giving the Lions four runs to close out the first inning.
UC Riverside responded in the bottom of the first with three runs, but the Lions carried their momentum into the top of the second.
Molly Grumbo hit a homerun, her second of the tournament. Debord singled to left field, and then advanced to second after Moreno singled to right field. Angulo hit a double, advancing Moreno to third and sending Debord home, giving the Lions a 6-3 lead. The Highlanders put one run on the board in the bottom of the second.
UC Riverside gained momentum in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs, and then in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three more and taking an 11-6 lead over the Lions.
The Lions tied things up in the top of the sixth, after Grumbo hit a single, sending
Page Mindedahl and Ehlen home, while advancing
Sierra Marshall, who was hit by the pitch. A single up the middle from Angulo advanced Debord to third, who was reached on a fielders choice, and it sent Grumbo and Marshall home.
Debord tied things up for the Lions after Dedrick hit a double to right center. The Highlanders scored another run in the bottom of the fifth, and then another one in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 13-11 lead.
LMU was able to put one more run on the board, after Grumbo scored, but it wasn't enough for the Lions to take the win.
Grumbo went 5-5 at the plate and scored four runs, had one homerun and three RBIs. Angulo went 3-4 at the plate and had five RBIs, while Moreno went 1-3. The Lions had 13 total hits, compared to the Highlander's 15.
Paulina Johnson pitched one inning, Brittany Steenbergen pitched 2.1,
Mallory Eckroth pitched .2 and
Linnay Wilson pitched 2.0. Wilson took the loss, but had two strikeouts.
The Lions closed out the Titan Classic against Cal State Fullerton. LMU was not able to put any runs on the board, while the Titans scored one in the bottom of the third, two in the bottom of the fourth, one in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth.
The Lions had two hits, while CSUF had six. Grumbo went 1-2 at the plate, while Gonzalez went 1-3.
Caroline Bridges pitched 2.1 innings and took the loss, Eckroth pitched 1.2 and Johnson pitched 2.0. Eckroth had one strikeout, while Johnson had two.
The Lions will head south for the Golden State Plus 27 tournament in Lake Elsinore, Calif. next week.
