Lions Open 2020 Season With a Win

FULLERTON, Calif., --The Loyola Marymount University softball team won its first game of the season on Friday, as the team made a seventh inning comeback to beat San Jose State at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Classic. 

" I am really proud of our fight today, said head coach Sami Strinz-Ward. "San Jose State is a very good team. Our ladies were resilient and competed from first pitch to last. Our pitching staff worked together to get the job done and we had multiple contributions from our offense. Riley had quite a day going 3-3 with two RBIs and Morgan clutched up for the game winner." 

 
San Jose State opened the game on a strong note, as the team put up two runs in the first inning, while the Lions went scoreless. The Spartans put up another run in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead. 
 
The Lions responded in the bottom of the third when Allisha Martinez hit a double to right center, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Riley Ehlen hit a single, sending Martinez home.  
 
Down 3-1, the Lions continued their momentum in the bottom of the fourth when Desiree Moreno hit a single. Amanda Treatch came in t pinch run for Moreno. Peyton Angulo hit a single to right field, advancing Treatch to second, Page Mindefahl pinch ran for Angulo, and advanced to third. Treatch stole third and then advanced home on a throwing error. 
 
Down 3-2, both teams went scoreless until the Lions made some nose in the bottom of the seventh. Megan Dedrick set the Lions up with a double down the left field line. Martinez flied out to center field, while Dedrick advanced too third. Ehlen earned her second RBI of the day after she hit a single to center field, advancing Dedrick home to tie things up at 3-3. 
 
Paris Nguyen came in to pinch hit for Sierra Marshall and was walked, advancing Ehlen to second. Molly Grumbo was hit by the pitch, advancing Marshall to second and Ehlen to third. A sacrifice fly from Morgan Debord sent Ehlen home, giving the Lions a 4-3 win.
 
Ehlen went 3-3 at the plate and had two RBIs and one run. Martinez, Moreno, Angulo and Dedrick all went 1-3 at the plate.
 
Mallory Eckroth pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and three runs. Brittney Steenbergen pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and zero runs, while Linnay Wilson took the win, pitching 1.1 innings and did not give up a hit or a run. 
 
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday to take on Middle Tennessee at 10:00 AM and Utah State at 12:30 PM.
