Lions Run Rule Cal Poly; Split on Day Three of Judi Garman Classic

FULLERTON, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount University softball team split on day three of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., as the team mercy-ruled Cal Poly, beating the Mustangs 13-3, and then lost to Boise State University 6-4. 
Fourth. 
Cal Poly put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first. LMU answered back in the top of the second. 
 
Megan Dedrick put the first run on the board for LMU after was walked, and then advanced to second when Sierra Marshall singled, and then scored after a throwing error, and then a fielding error. 
 
With Morgan Debord and Marshall on base, Molly Grumbo doubled to center, sending both Lions home. Andrea Gonzalez singles to right field, sending Grumbo home, giving the Lions a 4-1 lead to close out the top of the second. The Mustangs put one run on the board in the bottom of the second. 
 
The Lions continued their momentum in the top of the third, scoring six more runs. Marshall scored firist in the third, giving Grumbo the RBI after she singled. Gonzalez collected the next RBI after Riley Ehlen scored. A single from Angulo earned her an RBI after it sent Debord home. 
 
With bases loaded, Cal Poly walked three Lions, starting with Desiree Moreno, sending Grumbo home, which was followed by a walk from Dedrick, to send Gonzalez home. Marshall was the third consecutive walk, which sent Peyton Angulo home, giving the Lions a 10-2 lead to end the top of the third.
 
Cal Poly went scoreless in the bottom of the third, and the Lions went scoreless in the top of the fourth. The Mustangs were able to put one more run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. 
 
Up 10-3 to open the fifth inning, the Lions kept their momentum going, as Gonzalez scored off of a single from Moreno, Angulo scored off of a single from Ehlen and Moreno scored after a sacrifice fly from Taylor Keinath
 
The Lions ended the game at the bottom of the fifth on a mercy rule. 
 
The Lions had 14 total hits, while Cal Poly had five. Grumbo went 3-3 at the plate, Gonzalez went 4-4, Angulo went 2-3, while Marshall and Debord both went 1-2. 
 
Grumbo had a total of three RBIs, while Gonzalez and Moreno had two a piece. 
 
Brittany Steenbergen pitched 1.0 innings and gave up three hits and two runs. Mallory Eckroth pitched 4.0 innings and gave up two hits and one run. 
 
Up 1-0 on the day, the Lions battled in their second game against Boise State, but the team wasn't able to make the sweep. 
 
Boise State put the first run on the board in the bottom of the second. The Lions responded in the top of the third after Grumbo scored off of a single from Angulo. 
 
LMU took the lead in the top of the fourth after Grumbo doubled and Lauryn Garcia scored.
 
Up 2-1, the teams went scoreless until the sixth inning. Ehlen scored oon a single from Grumbo, and then Debord scored on a single from Gonzalez, giving the Lions a 4-1 lead to end the top of the sixth. 
 
Boise State responded in the bottom of the sixth with five runs to take a 6-4 lead. LMU wasn't able to score a run in the top of the seventh, dropping its first game of the Judi Garman Classic. 
 
The Lions had 12 total hits, compared to BSU's 11. Grumbo went 4-4 at the plate, while Dedrick went 3-4, Debord went 2-4 and Garcia went 1-2. 
 
Linnay Wilson pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 10 hits and six runs and collected three strikeouts. Eckroth pitched .2 innings and allowed one hit. 
 
Up next: The Lions will play their next two games of the Judy Garman Classic on Sunday. The team will take on Colorado State at 3:00 PM and Fresno State at 6:00 PM.
