LOS ANGELES – A full week of water polo begins with #13 LMU traveling down south to take on #11 UC San Diego in the non-conference rendition of the annual rivalry. The turnaround will then be quick as Loyola Marymount University is co-hosting the three-day SoCal Invitational with UCLA.
LMU and UCSD are set to play each other for the first time this season on Wednesday night, for a 6 p.m. game under the lights. The Tritons are ranked 11
th in the country and are 7-3 on the season with a 2-0 record in conference. The result of this game will not count towards the WWPA standings. The two teams will see each other again at LMU on Oct. 12 for the game that counts in the conference race.
General admission for the game is $5. Tickets will be sold at the Canyonview Aquatic Center one hour prior to the event.
The SoCal Invitational features 16 teams competing in 32 matches at both LMU's Burns Aquatics Center and UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center from Sept. 27-29. Each team is either ranked or receiving votes in latest Men's Varsity Top 20 released on Wednesday.
The field includes the top 11 nationally ranked teams, #1 UC Santa Barbara, #2 UCLA, #3 Stanford, #4 Pacific, #5 USC, #6 Pepperdine, #7 California, #8 Long Beach State, #9 UC Davis, #10 UC Irvine, and #11 UC San Diego, as well as #13 LMU, #14 Princeton, #20 San Jose State, and receiving votes Air Force and Pomona.
The four games played at Burns Aquatics Center to kick off the weekend will begin with Stanford and Air Force at 1 p.m. Long Beach State and UC Davis will follow at 2:20 p.m. USC will take the trip across Los Angeles to take on Princeton at 3:40. The Lions have the final game of the day, hosting Pacific at 5 p.m.
Friday's winners from each site will be scheduled to play at UCLA for the remainder of the tournament, while the teams that lose on Friday will spend the weekend at LMU.
Saturday's game times begin at 8 a.m. from each pool, with the following games scheduled to start each hour and twenty minutes afterwards.
Championship Sunday will play games every hour and a half, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m.
Tickets are sold on a per day and per site basis. Tickets are specific for each day and cannot be used at multiple sites. Live stats for all 32 games will be available on TheFOSH.
