LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team shutout Saint Mary's 8-0 in the last game of the series, forcing a mercy rule on Senior Day, resulting in the Lions 3-0 sweep on the weekend.
The Lions opened up the game honoring seniors
Hannah Bandimere and
Irma Sanchez. The Lions have both been huge assets to the program and have led the Lions to their 33-17, 9-3 WCC record.
After a 15-inning second game, the Lions closed out their last game with a quick shutout, starting in the first inning.
Maddison Flores set the tone when she hit a single to right field, and then advanced when
Delanie Wisz was walked, and then
Megan Dedrick was walked.
With bases loaded,
Andrea Gonzalez hit a double to left center, sending Dedrick, Wisz and Flores home. The Lions closed out the first inning with a 3-0 lead.
The Lions maintained their momentum in the second inning, as
Desiree Moreno quickly got on base after being walked,
Hailey Jackson came in to pinch run, Jackson then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Molly Grumbo hit a single up the middle, advancing Jackson to third. Grumbo then stole second, while
Irma Sanchez was walked.
With bases loaded, Wisz was hit by the pitch, giving Jackson a run.
With bases loaded again, Dedrick hit a double up the middle which sent Wisz, Sanchez and Grumbo home.
With Dedrick at second, Gonzalez hit a single to third base, giving Dedrick the run. The Lions closed out the bottom of the second up 8-0.
Neither team scored the rest of the game, forcing a mercy rule after the top of the fifth inning.
The Lions tallied up six hits compared to the Gaels four. Gonzalez went 2-2 at the plate, while Flores went 2-3 at the plate. Dedrick went 1-2, while Grumbo went 1-3.
Hannah Bandimere pitched four innings, only allowing three hits and zero runs, while having three strikeouts.
Linnay Wilson came in to finish the game, pitching one inning, allowing one hit and zero runs.
The Lions will conclude the rest of the regular season next week against Pacific in Stockton, Calif.
