Lions Bounce Back Against New Mexico

FULLERTON, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount softball team picked up its first win at the Judi Garman Classic, after defeating New Mexico 4-2 in Fullerton, Calif on Friday morning.

The Lions (8-7) had a change in momentum from their first day at the tournament, as they fell to No. 22 Auburn and Fresno State.

"Today was a nice bounce back win for us," said head coach Sami Strinz-Ward. "We were able to increase our run production. All three facets of the game were improved."

LMU started the game off on a strong note, as the team put the first run on the board in the first inning when Andrea Gonzalez scored after Maddison Flores was walked, giving Flores the RBI.

The Lions maintained momentum going into the second inning, putting two more runs on the board. Irma Sanchez hit a single, which brought Kaley Robinson home, resulting in an RBI for Sanchez.

The Lions made it a 3-0 lead after a walk and an RBI from Taylor Keinath that gave Sanchez the run.

Up 3-0, Molly Grumbo got a run in the fourth inning after Riley Ehlen hit a single, getting the RBI and giving the Lions a 4-0 lead.

The Lobos responded in the sixth inning with two runs, but it wasn't enough to beat the Lions, giving LMU its first win of the weekend.

The Lions had seven total hits and left 10 people on base, while New Mexico had five hits and left seven.

Grumbo, Flores and Hailey Jackson all went 1-3. Sanchez and Delanie Wisz went 1-4, while Ehlen went 2-3.

Samantha Manti (3-3) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed five hits and two runs, getting her third win of the season. Linnay Wilson closed the game with 1.2 hitless innings, getting her second save of the year.

The Lions will be back on the field on Saturday to take on No. 2 UCLA at noon. This will be the second time this season the Lions and the Bruins have met. In the teams' last metting, UCLA beat the Lions 3-1.
