OAKLAND, Calif. – Following a weekend of results that included three wins over teams ranked higher 14
th nationally or higher, including two programs ranked ahead of LMU, the Loyola Marymout University men's water polo program has moved into a tie for 10
th in the latest CWPA Coaches Poll. Additionally, the Western Water Polo Association has named
Alexandros Athymaritis WWPA Player of the Week on Thursday.
Athymaritis led the Lions to three top 14 wins this weekend, including a pair of upsets over #11 UC San Diego and #10 UC Irvine. Athymaritis was a force in the middle, drawing a team-high 19 exclusions in five games, including back-to-back games with 19 drawn exclusions on Saturday in the SoCal Invitational. Athymaritis finished second on the team this week with 13 goals after scoring in every game and four times in both of Saturday's games. His 12 goals in four games in the SoCal Invitational led the team and were the eighth most in a field that featured the top 11 teams in country and all 16 teams who are either ranked or receiving votes in the national poll. This is the first Player of the Week award for LMU this season.
The Lions will play just one game this weekend, hosting Navy for a Sunday morning non-conference matchup. The Midshipmen are 7-5 this season, and hold a 3-0 record in their conference. The game will be played at Burns Aquatics Center at 10:30 a.m. and is free to attend.
