LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount men's water polo tops Air Force for the second time this year, and picks up a conference win this time around. The Lions (3-5, 1-0 WWPA) controlled the match from the get-go, topping the Falcons (2-8, 1-1 WWPA), 15-8.
LMU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in their home debut.
Blazo Mitrovic opened the scoring with his first of three.
Joseph Shaw and
Alexandros Athymaritis extended the lead with a goal apiece in the opening period before Air Force got two back.
A total of seven goals were scored in the second quarter, with five of them coming from the Lions. Athymaritis scored three goals in the first four minutes of the second, with Air Force scoring just one in that stretch. Following a goal by the visitors, LMU strung together six consecutive goals between the end of the second and start of the third quarter, capped by a 5-meter by
Daniel Arellano. In that run, Mitrovic scored twice,
Dayne Jagga,
Scott Thomas, and
Eric Reitmeir. LMU took an 8-4 lead into halftime, and built it up to 12-5 with 3 minutes remaining in the third.
Reitmeir added a second to open the fourth quarter. After Air Force followed with two,
Daniel Roth and
Rylan Russell sandwiched one more Falcon goal to close out the game with a 15-8 win.
Mitrovic finished with three assists, and Arellano and Reitmeir each added a pair.
LMU tied their season-high with 15 goals, matching the output against Redlands on opening day.
Conference play continues on Wednesday as LMU travels south to face UC San Diego for a 6 p.m. match.
