BOX SCORE
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In their final regular season conference game of the year, Loyola Marymount men's water polo defeated Santa Clara, 14-10, on the road. The #15 Lions (12-12, 5-2 WWPA) jumped out early with a 3-0 lead and never looked back against the #14 Broncos (10-12, 2-5 WWPA).
Eric Reitmeir,
Blazo Mitrovic, and
Dayne Jagga scored the game's first three goals to push LMU to an early lead. After Santa Clara got one back,
Alexandros Athymaritis closed out the quarter with an even-strength goal to give the Lions the 4-1 edge after one.
The lead grew to four goals after
Matt Braun opened the second quarter with a goal on his only shot attempt of the game. The Broncos got two goals back, but Reitmeir capitalized on the powerplay to double up the score, 6-3. Adam Low answered with back-to-back goals for Santa Clara, only to be matched by Jagga's consecutive goals for the Lions to close out the half at 8-5.
Santa Clara cut it to a one-goal game to open the third quarter, but Athymaritis did not allow the Broncos to tie it up after scoring the answer. The Broncos cut it to one-score games twice more in the period, but responses by
Daniel Arellano and
Austin Clark kept LMU ahead. Jagga closed out the third with his fourth goal of the game to make it a 12-9 advantage after three.
Mitrovic opened the fourth quarter with a goal after a Santa Clara exclusion and Arellano followed to make it a 14-9 game with 4:41 remaining. The Broncos added one later, but the lead was too big as LMU finished it out on the road with a 14-10 win.
The Lions finished WWPA competition at 5-2, tying Cal Baptist for third in the conference. LMU did beat the Lancers earlier this season in conference play.
The regular season closes out with a trip to Long Beach State for a 6 p.m. Wednesday start.
The WWPA tournament follows Nov. 16-18.
