FRESNO, Calif. – Loyola Marymount men's water polo secured third place in the Western Water Polo Association Championships with a 10-7 win over Air Force.
LMU had to work from behind early, with Air Force opening the game with a goal after winning the initial sprint.
Blazo Mitrovic tied the game on the ensuing possession after the Lions drew the exclusion. Air Force scored with 4:50 on the clock to take their final of the day, before the LMU comeback began. The Lions closed out the first quarter with four unanswered goals, scored by
Joseph Shaw,
Matt Braun, Mitrovic, and
Dayne Jagga.
Mitrovic extended the lead to 6-2 with his even strength goal to open the second quarter, his third of the day. After the Falcons cut into the lead with two consecutive goals, Shaw got one back before the end of the half to make it a 7-4 advantage at intermission.
The Lions jumped out of the gates quickly to open the third quarter, scoring three straight goals following halftime. Alex Athymaritis,
Eric Reitmeir, and Braun all scored with LMU at even strength. Air Force finished the third with a goal, and scored both in the fourth quarter, but the lead was too large as LMU won, 10-7.
Mitrovic finished with a game-high three goals, and both Mitrovic and Shaw recorded two assists.
Austin Clark led all players with three assists in the game.
Robert Halligan recorded 10 saves and three steals, while only allowing six goals in his 29:35 minutes as LMU's goalkeeper.
Zach Zemliak replaced Halligan for the final 2:25.
The Lions finish the season with an even 14-14 record, the first time hitting the .500 mark since the 2012 season.
