DAVIS, Calif. – Entering the game with a combined 9-1 record in Western Water Polo Association games this season, Loyola Marymount men's water polo and UC Davis battled in a game with first place implications on the line. The #15 Lions (11-11, 4-2 WWPA) and #9 Aggies (15-6, 6-0 WWPA) entered the final minute tied on Thursday night, before UC Davis pulled away for an 11-10 win.
The Aggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead before
Dayne Jagga put LMU on the board with 3:58 on the clock. After UC Davis pushed it to 4-1,
Alexandros Athymaritis got one back to close out the first.
Athymaritis picked right back up to open the second with a goal top open the period, and Jagga followed it to tie the score at 4-4. The two teams then traded off the next six goals carrying into the third quarter. UC Davis pushed ahead 5-4 and then
Blazo Mitrovic converted a penalty to tie it at five heading into halftime.
Eric Reitmeir gave LMU their first lead, scoring at the 5:44 mark of the third. After UCD tied it, Mitrovic put the Lions on top 7-6 with a successful powerplay goal. The Aggies scored three-straight goals to retake their lead.
Joseph Shaw bookended the end of the third and the start of the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals to even the game at 9-9.
The score held until Reitmeir pushed LMU ahead with an even-strength goal with 2:50 left on the game clock. UC Davis followed it with two straight goals, at the 1:48 then 0:54 marks, to push ahead 11-10 with under a minute play. The score line held as LMU was unable to score the equalizing goal before time expired.
The Lions still have one WWPA remaining on the schedule. LMU travels to Santa Clara to play the Broncos Saturday at noon.
