PALO ALTO, Calif. – Loyola Marymount men's water polo opened the MPSF Nor Cal Tournament with the tough draw of facing #4 Cal Berkeley on Friday. The Lions (6-7, 2-1) played from behind the entire game, before ultimately falling to the Bears, 17-7.
Cal scored the game's first three goals, until
Dayne Jagga put LMU on the board with 1:54 to play in the opening period. The Bears added an extra one on the following possession to make it a 4-1 game after one.
After Cal opened with two straight in the second,
Daniel Arellano showed an LMU answer with his goal at the 6:13 mark. The Bears extended it to a 9-2 game at the half.
With the deficit extended to 12-2, LMU scored two of the final three goals of the third quarter to make it a 13-4 game heading into the fourth.
Blazo Mitrovic scored his first with 1:50 on the clock and Jagga added his second with 34 seconds remaining.
LMU's most-prolific scoring quarter came in the fourth. Mitrovic added his second of the game with 5:56 remaining. The Lions closed the game with the final two goals, scored by
Matthew Knoedler at full strength and
Alex Davis on a powerplay.
Saturday's schedule is now set, with LMU and Pomona-Pitzer scheduled to square off at 9:20 a.m. from Belardi Pool. The Sagehens are the 12-seed in the field and lost to the fifth-seeded UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 12-7, immediately following the LMU game.
