Sept. 23, 2015 LOS ANGELES -Senior Vuk Cvetkovic scored with 1:18 left in the fourth overtime to lift LMU to a 13-12 win over 13th-ranked UC San Diego in front of more than 2,000 fans at Canyonview Aquatics Center in La Jolla Wednesday night.
It was a game perfect for this rivalry as host UCSD jumped out to a big lead only to see the Lions hold on to a one-goal lead late. The Triton's Chase Cockerill scored with 24 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 9-9 to set-up a shutout for overtime.
Freshman Dayne Jagga had his coming out party with four goals and sophomore Dominick Beaudine made 11 saves as the Lions won their third straight (3-5).
In the first of two three minute overtime periods, the Lions scored three straight to make it 12-9, including Emanual Di Stasio's goal with 24 seconds left.
Tyler Mancuso scored a big goal for the Tritons with 12 seconds left in the first overtime period to make it 12-10.
In the second three minute overtime period, the Tritons scored two goals in 30 seconds, the second coming with 1:21 left by Nick Alexander.
Neither team could get the winner, setting up the first sudden death overtime period. Beaudine would make a pair of saves in the third overtime period to force a fourth frame, the second of sudden death.
Beaudine and the Lions would fight off a UCSD 6-on-5 attack, with Beaudine picking up his 11th save with about 1:35 to play. The defensive stand gave the Lions' possession and Cvetkovic would knock in the winner, his third goal of the game.
The game was a non-conference battle with the official Western Water Polo Association contest coming at the Burns Aquatics Center on Oct. 24.
The Lions led 4-3 at the half but saw UCSD explode in the third quarter for n 8-5 lead. However, the Lions would have one of their best fourth quarters of the young season.
Jagga scored two goals in the first minute of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 8-7. He then tied it at 8-8 on the third assist of the game by Cvetkovic with 4:59 to play. Two minutes later, Jon Beck gave the Lions the 9-8 led with 2:59 to play.
Neither team could get on the board until Cockerill sent it to overtime.
The Lions continue their three-game road swing with their first official WWPA game of the season when they travel to Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 26 for a 3 pm start. The road swing ends at No. 6 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 12 noon.
Note: The official scoresheet and officials reported Matt Cuozzo scoring the game winner. It has been corrected to reflect Cvetkovic as actually scoring the game winner.
