LOS ANGELES -LMU men's water polo used the home pool advantage at the Burns Aquatics Center perfectly, posting a pair of big wins in a triple-header on Saturday. The Lions posted a 19-8 win over 19th-ranked Whittier then completed the day with a 12-7 win over Pomona-Pitzer.
With the game at 6-5, LMU men's water polo finished the game outscoring Whittier 13-3 to earn a big 19-9 win in the first game. The Poets (5-4) outlasted the Sagehens late rally in the second game for a 10-9 win in the second game. The Lions (2-5) then earned some redemption from the first game of the season against the Sagehens (3-5) pulling away in the second half.
Wittier cut the score to 6-5 with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter on a goal from Massimiliano Mirarchi. From there, the Lions would build a 10-6 lead at the half, including junior captain Matt Cuozzo's third goal of the quarter with three seconds remaining.
He Lions would stretch the lead to 15-8 after the third and then would blank the Poets in the final quarter for the final margin. Cuozzo finished with five goals and senior Milutin Mitrovic had four. Nine other Lions scored in the game.
Mitrovic added three more against Pomona-Pitzer to give him seven for the day. Vuk Cvetkovic also had three goals for the Lions in the second game.
Like game one, the Lions saw their opponent score early in the second half to cut the lead to 6-5. This time it was Phillip Clayman's goal just 46 seconds into the second half that put Pomona-Pitzer within one.
And just like game one, the Lions pulled away.
They scored the next five goals to go up 11-5 on Laim Jennis' third goal of the game
Following the triple header, the Lions will play three straight on the road, starting with the tradition rivalry homecoming game at UC San Diego on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 6 pm.
