LOS ANGELES - The 16th-ranked LMU men's water polo team erased a three-goal fourth quarter deficit but couldn't get the winner as Air Force scored in the final minutes to earn a 10-9 win in Western Water Polo Association action on Sunday afternoon at the Burns Aquatics Center.
Trailing 9-6 entering the fourth quarter, the Lions got goals from Vuk Cvetkovic, Liam Jennis and Emanuel Di Stasio to tie the game at 9-9 with 2:39 to play. However, Air Force would get the winner as Petar Jackovich scored his only goal of the game with 1:38 to play to give the Falcons the key road win in conference play.
Di Stasio led the Lions with three goals followed by Jennis and Cvetkovic with two each. Robby Stiefel scored three for Air Force. LMU falls to 3-3 in conference play while Air Force goes to 4-2.
The Lions jumped out to a 4-1 lead and led 6-4 with less than a minute to play in the first half. Air Force then scored with three seconds to play to kick start a run of five straight goals as they took the 9-6 lead with 1:52 to play in the third quarter.
LMU will end the regular season taking on fourth-ranked Long Beach State on the road at 7 pm on Nov. 13. They will then host the 2014 WWPA Championships on Nov. 21-23. Tickets are on sale at LMULions.com/Tickets.
