SAN DIEGO - Racing a pair of rigs on both the men's and women's side, the LMU rowing teams advanced two boats to the Grand Finals and two to the Third Finals Sunday at the 2013 San Diego Crew Classic.

The Lion women competed in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight while the men raced their varsity eight and lightweight eight.

The women's V8+ opened competition on Saturday in the 'A' preliminary heat which included West Coast Conference defending champion San Diego. The Lions and Toreros went head-to-head for the entire 2,000 meters with USD winning the head in 6:42.30 and LMU coming in second in 6:47.51.

The finish moved both squads to the Grand Final on Sunday where the Lions placed fourth overall in 6:56.51. Miami took gold in 6:42.30, USD took silver in 6:47.09 and British Columbia took bronze in 6:52.58. The Grand Final appearance in the V8+ was the first for the Lions since they won the Varsity 8 Cal Cup title in 2004.

"It was a great team effort and good day for the program, said LMU Director of Rowing Vaclav Kacir. "We showed improvement from race to race, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us.

"Additionally, we had an excellent alumni and parent turnout, and it was great to have their support throughout the weekend."

The LMU women's 2V8+ pulled a time of 7:30.22 in its preliminary heat, which advanced them to Sunday's Third Final. The Lions would trim more than eight seconds off their prelim time as they took fourth place in 7:21.92.

On the men's side, a 6:47.04, fifth place finish in their preliminary heat was good enough to advance the Lions' lightweight 8+ to the Grand Final where they placed fifth in 6:54.06.

The men's varsity 8+ pulled a time of 6:24.24 in their preliminary heat and advanced to the Third Final where they took first in 6:28.01.

The Lion women return to action on Tuesday, April 9, hosting University of Central Florida in duel action in Marina del Rey. The men travel to Newport, Calif., on Sunday, April 14 to compete in the Chapman Regatta.
