LONG BEACH, Calif. - In its final tune-up before the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on April 27-28, the LMU men's rowing team won a trio of events, two in head-to-head competition against UC Santa Barbara and one versus the Gauchos and UCS, Saturday on the L.A. Harbor course.
In the lightweight novice four, the lineup of (cox) Trent Hosokawa, (bow) Daniel Garber, (2) Patrick Donovan, (3) Jordan Young, (stroke) Matt Beauchamp jumped out to an early lead over UCSB. After losing ground, and the lead, the Lions closed out the 2,000 meter race with a strong sprint and a 7:46 finish to the Gauchos' time of 7:53.
It was another late surge that led the novice four lineup of (cox) Nina Lepp, (bow) Trent Benson, (2) Jordan Furlong, (3) Trevor Felix, (stroke) Taylor Coletta to a victory (7:33) over UCSB (7:43) and USC (8:14).
The varsity four race featured the Lion lineup of (cox) Jennifer Sonnier, (bow) Kawai Akiona, (2) Michael Morehart, (3) Quin Thames, (stroke) Brendan Henderson and two UCSB boats. LMU took command early and was able to hold on down the stretch for a winning finish time of 7:18. UCSB's 'A' boat finished in second (7:21), while its 'B' boat rounded things out in 7:51.
The Lion men's crew is scheduled to compete in the Varsity 4+, Novice 4+, Lightweight Novice 4+ and 2- at the WIRA Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
LMU's women's team will also be racing, set to compete in the Varsity 8+, JV 8+, Varsity 4+ and 2-.
