MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The LMU women's rowing program took huge stride forward Friday morning, besting West Coast Conference favorite Gonzaga in the Varsity 8+ head-to-head race at Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey.
The Lions, who were picked fourth in the 2013 WCC preseason poll, clinched the V8+ race in 7:21.84, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the Zags (7:31.01). The win marks the LMU's first over the Zags since the 2006 WCC Championship. On that day, the Lions earned their first ever WCC title as the V8+ victory broke an overall points tie with Gonzaga, who finished as the conference runner-up.
I got to watch some really gutsy racing today from all three boats," said LMU Director of Rowing Vaclav Kacir. "Our girls are working hard as a team and it's exciting to see that unity."
Gonzaga edged the Lions in both the Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+, but LMU showed it is quickly closing the gap. The Zags took the 2V8+ race in 7:32.84 with LMU coming in at 7:31.01. Gonzaga's V4+ time was 8:39.75 while the Lions crossed the finish line in 9:07.73.
Last May at the 2012 WCC Championship, LMU finished 27 seconds behind Gonzaga's 2V8+ and 37 seconds behind in the V4+.
Next up for the Lions is the Berg Cup hosted by Orange Coast College at Newport Harbor on Saturday, March 23.
