LA JOLLA, Calif. - Senior Edgaras Asajavicius ended his career with a five-goal game and freshman Joe Ferretti ended his first season with a four-goal contest as the Lions' one-two punch combined for nine of the Lions' 10 goals.
The Lions finished the season at 17-8 overall and 12-2 in the WWPA. Santa Clara falls to 17-18.
It was yet another tight, defensive affair that saw Santa Clara take a 2-1 lead after the first frame. The teams traded goals before the Broncos capitalized on a 5-meter penalty shot with just 18 seconds left to take the 5-3 lead at the half.
LMU then scored the first three goals of the third quarter, taking a 6-5 lead on a Ferretti goal with 3:58 to play in the frame. After a 6-on-5 goal tied it for the Bronncos, Asajavicius scored on his second 5-meter penalty shot to take the 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
It was a physical affair as the teams combined for 29 exclusions.
LMU went 2-for-2 on the penalty shots while Santa Clara went 1-for-2 as goalie Kyle Testman came up with a big save. He was huge in the second half, allowing just two goals in playing the entire game. He finished with seven of his 11 saves in the second half.
The Lions extended the lead to 8-6 in the first possession of the fourth quarter. The Broncos cut the lead to one, 8-7, on another 6-on-5 goal with 6:56 to play. It was all Lions from there as Asajavicius and Ferretti each scored 6-on-5 goals for the win.
Asajavicius and Testman were both named to the WWPA All-Tournament team as Asajavicius had nine goals while Testman had 30 saves in the three games.
