LOS ANGELES - Junior Edgaras Asajavicius scored a season-high five goals but it was not enough as No. 10 LMU fell to No. 2 UCLA, 14-6, under the lights at Spieker Aquatics Center on Saturday evening.
UCLA (5-1) raced to a 5-0 lead near the end of the first quarter and never looked back against the visiting Lions (6-5). Asajavicius scored LMU's first three goals before Ikaika Aki found the back of the cage in the third quarter.
UCLA's offensive attack in the opening frame included goals within a 21-second span. The Bruins' lead increased to five after they converted on a 6-on-5 situation (2:04) and then scored with 1:44 to play.
LMU got on the board with Asajavicius' first of five goals with 1:09 remaining in the opening period.
The Bruins outscored LMU in each of the following three quarters - by a 3-2 count in the second, 5-3 in the third and 1-0 in the fourth. From the second quarter on, UCLA's advantage never fell to fewer than four goals.
Loyola Marymount shored its deficit to four goals twice - with 3:57 to play (6-2) in the second quarter on Asajavicius' second goal and at the 6:22 mark in the third quarter (9-5) on a 6-on-5 score from Asajavicius.
Leading 8-3 at halftime, UCLA forged ahead with five third-quarter goals, pushing its margin to 13-6 by the end of the third quarter.
LMU will return to UCLA at the SoCal Tournament at Spieker Aquatics Center next weekend. The Lions will open with No. 6 Pacific at 9:50 p.m. The Bruins open their tournament schedule against No. 17 Princeton on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The winner of that match will face the winner of the Pacific-Loyola Marymount contest.
