LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The sixth-ranked LMU men's water polo team earned an 11-6 win over 11th-ranked UC San Diego at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center in Western Water Polo Association action Saturday afternoon. Its the fourth straight win this season and 10th straight overall for the Lions over rival UCSD.
With the win, the Lions improve to 14-6 overall and 9-0 against WWPA foes. UCSD falls to 11-13 and 7-5 in the WWPA. Andrew Aki led the Lions with three goals, Edgaras Asajavicius and Derek Milligan added two each.
LMU's defense and goalie Andy Stevens posted another shutout in a quarter, this time in the opening frame to jump out to a 2-0 lead. They extended the lead to 4-1 at the break. Stevens finished with 13 saves.
The teams then combined for six goals in the third quarter, three each as UCSD got as close to 6-4 with 1:43 remaining. The team's traded goals and the Lions had their lead cut to a pair again on an extra-man goal by UCSD, making it 7-5 with 7:18 to play.
The Lions then scored the next two goals to make it 9-5 with 4:18 to play. They tacked on two more for the final margin to close the quarter.
The 6-on-5 was big as the Lions went 4-for-5 on the extra-man attack. UCSD went 4-for-9.
LMU continues play in the WWPA as they host Santa Clara on Friday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. in the final home game of the season.
